APPLICATION PROCESS

Applying for AEOP Internships and Fellowships is not necessarily a simple task, but we try to make it straightforward to give you the best chance at reaching your STEM potential. This page will walk you through the application process and give you some tips to keep in mind while you apply. We wish you the best of luck!

AEOP applications are always open, but application deadlines vary based on the individual opportunity. Some opportunities have specific deadlines while others are kept open and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.  If the kind of experience you are looking for is not included in the list of opportunities currently accepting applications, check back frequently. There may be an opportunity soon.

You can also apply for as many opportunities as you want using one application. As these are in-person positions, they cannot be completed remotely unless a hybrid or virtual option is specifically noted on the position description. We recommend only applying for opportunities where you can live within a reasonable commuting distance, because transportation, meals and housing are not provided. Sometimes relocation support may be provided for fellowships and some internships for undergrads. If you have already submitted your application and find a new opportunity that you would like to pursue, follow the directions in the FAQ on how to add a new opportunity to an existing application.

1

Gather all necessary documents to attach to your application.

  1. Required for ALL applications:
      • Most current resume
      • Most recent transcript (Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.)
  2. Required for SOME applications – check description of position(s) you are applying for:
      • Letters of recommendation: Applicants provide the name, email address, and a brief description of your relationship to the person they have invited to provide a letter of recommendation. The application system will email the recommender with information on how to submit their letter.
      • Personal Statement

2

Create an account in the AEOP application portal.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT use your school email address. Use a personal email address to which you will always have access.

3

Follow directions to fill out the application and attach the applicable documentation.

You will need to get parent/guardian approval if you are under 18 years old. You will need to provide the name and email address for your parent/guardian, and they will need to log into the application system to authorize your participation.

4

Submit your application before the deadline.

Note: If a letter of recommendation is required, your application will not be considered complete until the recommendation is received. For applications without listed deadlines, it is beneficial to submit your complete materials ASAP.

After Applying

After you have submitted the application, it will be sent to the specific lab(s) that you applied for. The lab(s) will review all the applicants, and select the candidates to whom they will offer internship or fellowship positions. If you are selected, you will be contacted by a representative of the lab to move forward with the next steps. Keep an eye out for those emails!

Keep in mind…

    • The AEOP Internships and Fellowships office is here to support you through the application steps and after positions are awarded. However, each participating lab manages their own independent process to review and select applicants, and their approach and timelines vary and often take several weeks or months. The AEOP Internships and Fellowships office is unable to provide specific answers about any lab’s timeline and decisions.
    • If you are not accepted the first time you apply, you always have the option to apply again in a future round. Fellowships and internships are highly competitive, so do not see it as a failure if you don’t get accepted the first time you apply. In the meantime, explore some of the other educational resources we have to offer!
    • AEOP will not be able to update your email address if the one you use to sign up gets deactivated. For this reason, do not use your school email address. In order to ensure successful future communication, use a personal email that you will always be able to access.
    • The application system operates best with the following browsers: Firefox, Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer. DO NOT use Safari, as this operating system will not allow applicants to upload required documents.
    • Visit our AEOP FAQs page for answers to common questions regarding applications.
