AEOP INTERNSHIPS

Paid opportunities for high-school and undergraduate students.

What are AEOP Internships?

Interested in pursuing a career in STEM? Want to take the next step in STEM education? As an AEOP intern, you can gain first-hand exposure to the cutting-edge research that’s happening in top university labs and U.S. Army Research Laboratories and Centers. These paid opportunities will give you a competitive advantage when applying for future career or education opportunities. Work with the mentorship of a professional scientist or engineer, learn about paths in your STEM field of interest, and develop the tools you need to achieve your STEM goals!

Internships are generally full-time, short-term, in-person positions (there are some part-time opportunities that take place during the academic year). Interns must live within reasonable commuting distance of their assigned lab, because transportation, meals and housing are not provided. We have many options throughout the country and we hope you’ll able to find an internship that fits your interests and location!

INTERNship Benefits

Our goal is to connect students and scientists with exceptional paid research positions, and also provide holistic support that can help you start and sustain a stable, satisfying career in STEM.

Conduct research that matters

U.S. Army-sponsored research addresses the nation’s biggest challenges. An AEOP internship provides the opportunity to be part of the history of discovery and innovation for the benefit of the country.

Stand out from peers

Our internships are competitive, and the experience you gain is priceless. An AEOP internship looks great to college admissions officers and recruiters for STEM jobs.

Be in the room where it happens

Apply classroom knowledge and feed your curiosity by immersing yourself in the research world. Not only will you be exposed to high-tech equipment and cutting-edge techniques, but you will learn the culture of STEM that include the sounds, the pace and the personal dynamics of a working lab.

Connect with a personal mentor

There is so much to learn from the people in a lab. As an AEOP intern, you will receive formal mentorship from a professional scientist or engineer. In addition, there will be multiple opportunities for you to learn from other STEM practitioners of varying levels of experience. Receive guidance and coaching, and start building a network that will make all the difference in your STEM journey.

Build lifelong connections

Although you’ll be working at a lab in your location, AEOP facilitates connections within the larger AEOP network, so you’re building professional STEM connections with like-minded peers.

Expand your career vision and skills

Take advantage of our training and materials in the AEOP Learning Hub. These include master classes, workshops, and webinar series that highlight hot STEM careers, research areas and additional AEOP opportunities to help you prepare for your next step.

Receive professional guidance.

Work with our outreach specialists for one-on-one support to enhance your college-readiness and professional skills, or to build skills required for graduate school applications or your job search. They provide “real talk” and answer your most pressing questions.

Earn a stipend

All AEOP interns receive an educational stipend in recognition of their work. The stipend amount varies by internship location and program duration. If selected for the internship, information about the stipend will be provided in an award letter.

Am I eligible?

All internship participants must be current high school students or undergraduate students (including those who have completed these degrees within the last 60 months) who are U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents. Additional eligibility requirements vary by location. Locations may require that applicants meet specific age or grade in school requirements, which are not negotiable. Prerequisite coursework may also be required.

Applicants must meet the general eligibility requirements, complete the AEOP Internships application, and submit recommendations (as needed) by the deadline in order to be considered for an internship.

How do I apply?

Start by browsing our current positions to see if any openings are a good fit for you. Then apply by filling out our application. It is the same application regardless of the opportunity you are applying for. Only apply to internships in locations where you will have somewhere to live, such as with family, extended family, a close friend, or your college’s housing.

There is no application fee required, and participation in AEOP Internships is free. Application deadlines vary by position.
